Our Concerns with The Proposed Changes to Triangle Park

A number of Forest Park residents are concerned that the proposed changes will fundamentally alter the character of the park, and thus the neighborhood. The plans propose cutting down a number of our treasured old growth trees only to be replaced by larger play structures, concrete, artificial turf, a pavilion, and artificial playground “surfacing.” See the proposed plans in the link below. We are also concerned by the fundamental lack of transparency with the entire process.

OUR CONCERNS WITH THIS PROPOSAL:

  •   Lots of our old growth shady trees removed

  •   Artificial turf, concrete, and playground “surfacing” replacing our natural grass, dirt and mulched area.

A large pavilion added on the concrete area

  •   Very large play structures added that deter from the historical nature of Forest Park

  • We are especially concerned by the very large play structure with large tube slides. We fear this will be quite large and it’s not in line with our quiet neighborhood park.

  •   Very few trees left in this plan (only seeing trees remaining around the perimeter of the plan).

  •   Concerned about the fundamental change this would mean for our beloved, natural park and playground.

  •   While we love some updates, like the updated fencing and new crosswalks, we are concerned by other features of this plan.

Feedback We’ve Received So Far.

“No pavilion added. That will bring large groups and even overnight guests. We have very little parking already and the crowds a pavilion will attract will clog our narrow historic streets even more.”

“We don’t need to change the fundamental vibe of Triangle Park. We just need to lightly upgrade some things - love the fencing upgrade, hate the large play structure with massive slides - what an eyesore and totally out of line with the neighborhood!”

“I’m very concerned at the plans to remove the majority of trees in our park. These trees create a natural wonderland for children, a home for our local owls, and shady respite for all in the hot Alabama summer. Nature is a true luxury and we need more wild spaces- destroying that will be an irreparable loss to our neighborhood. This park is a neighborhood treasure and one of the reasons we moved here.”

“The way this massive change was proposed with very little chance for true community input concerns me most. I want to put a stop to plans until we get a true community consensus that is transparent and all concerns are addressed, rather than having one person change the park to their liking.”
